THE EVENT FORMED PART OF WORLD FOOD DAY ACTIVITIES.
As part of a project titled "The Enhancement of the Efficiency of the Production-Distribution Supply Chain in the Fruits and Vegetables Sector," the Department of Agriculture, in collaboration with the Taiwan Technical Mission, joined the Food and Agriculture Organization in commemorating World Food Day with a Farmers Market.
The farmers market offered an opportunity for farmers as well as agriculture-related small businesses to sell their products directly to those who work, live, and visit Castries Central. The initiative took place at Constitution Park, and forms part of a series of farmers’ markets hosted across Saint Lucia under the Seven Crops Project. The products on display included organic produce, potted plants, and locally made products.
Marketing Specialist of the Taiwan Technical Mission, Ms. Ai-Lin Chen, explains that with the difficulties brought on by COVID-19 in the agriculture industry, this initiative provides farmers with a good avenue to showcase their products and increase their sales.
“I think the main purpose for the farmers market is that we make local consumers aware of the high-quality of products produced.”
Project Coordinator of the Seven Crops Project, Ms. Adline Eudovic, said the Farmers Market is in-keeping with the goals of World Food Day as it promotes healthy eating and sustainability of the agriculture industry. Ms. Eudovic added that the Ministry of Agriculture will continue to collaborate with the Taiwan Technical Mission under the Seven Crops Project to reach the overall goal of reducing the food import bill in Saint Lucia.
