AS CONSUMERS CONTINUE TO NAVIGATE GLOBAL ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES, THE EXTENSION PROVIDES AN IMPORTANT LAYER OF SUPPORT FOR HOUSEHOLDS WHILE REINFORCING GOVERNMENT'S COMMITMENT TO PROMOTING AFFORDABILITY, CONSUMER WELFARE AND MARKET STABILITY.
Saint Lucian consumers are expected to benefit from continued savings on essential food items following Government’s approval of an extension of the waiver of customs service charge through May 31, 2028, and customs import duties through June 30, 2027 on select price-controlled food products and zero rated Value Added Tax (VAT) on building materials through June 30, 2027.
The decision follows a comprehensive assessment conducted by the Consumer Affairs Division, which found that previous fiscal relief measures had generally succeeded in reducing prices and improving affordability for consumers while helping to cushion the impact of global inflationary pressures and supply chain disruptions.
The Consumer Affairs Division's assessment examined the impact of various fiscal relief initiatives, including duty waivers and VAT concessions, through continuous market monitoring and price surveillance conducted between August 2023 and April 2026.
"The findings revealed that consumers experienced measurable savings across several categories of essential goods, with notable reductions recorded for key food items including cooking oil, corned beef and other household staples. The assessment also found that the relief measures contributed to greater price stability and increased affordability for many families despite ongoing international economic challenges," noted Wendy Frederick, Director of Consumer Affairs.
According to Frederick, the extension of the concessions will allow consumers to continue benefiting from lower prices on essential food items while supporting the Government's broader efforts to ease the cost of living and protect household purchasing power.
"The assessment further highlighted the importance of ongoing market surveillance to ensure that the benefits of fiscal concessions are passed on to consumers. The Consumer Affairs Division will continue to closely monitor retail price movements and assess the impact of the extended measures on consumers across Saint Lucia," Frederick sighted.
The extension reflects the Government's commitment to evidence-based policymaking, with the positive outcomes identified through consumer price monitoring helping to inform the decision to continue the relief measures through 2028 and 2030.
As consumers continue to navigate global economic uncertainties, the extension provides an important layer of support for households while reinforcing Government's commitment to promoting affordability, consumer welfare and market stability.
The Department of Consumer Affairs in coming weeks will roll out a comprehensive media/consumer sensitization campaign, aimed at informing consumers of the benefits to be had via the extension of the waiver.
